The Buried Girl

In December of 1849 a petty criminal called John Loxely kidnaps the daughter of a wealthy landowner and buries her alive in a wooden crate somewhere on Dartmoor. As he returns to demand his ransom he is killed by the local police in a bungled attempt at capture. It seemed that the girl was doomed to die a lonely death on the moor. Fortunately in the next village lived a women called Anne Izzard. She was well known to have the power of seeing, for this she had often been attacked by neighbours scared of her powers even though the Witchcraft Act of 1735 had made this type of persecution illegal. Anne Izzard was summoned, and she came to lay her hands on the dead body. Unbelievable as it seems she was able to contact the soul of Loxely and find out where poor Alice was hidden".
